Overwinter Boat Storage
Having a boat during the summer Is fun, but when the weather turns cold or you need to start thinking about what kind of boat storage you want for your new toy.
if you have an expensive vote in particular you want to be sure to story correctly and take the time to do the job right. Practicing good boat storage procedures might take a little bit longer but it will save you both time and money in the long run.
Here are a few tips that you should follow when storing your boat for the winter. You’ll also need to have the following equipment on hand in order to get it ready for storage:
1. Storage/Fogging Oil
2. Anti-Corrosion Spray
3. Fuel Stabilizer
4. Trailer Jack
5. Spray Lube
6. Tools
Fuel stabilizer will help to reduce condensation from forming in the fuel tank and lines and needs to be added when there is a full tank of gas. When you’re adding fuel stabilizer you need to call the manufacturer’s instructions precisely. Start the motor on flusher for about one minute so that the treated fuel gets pushed through the system.
Fogging oil should be applied to the carburetor. You will notice that most motors and boats have the fittings for this fogging oil but if yours doesn’t have them you need only to find openings where you can apply the oil. In some cases you may need to remove the carburetor cover. The fogging oil will make the motor smoke more than normal the first couple times you run it.
The next boat storage step is to unhook the flusher and then drain the gear case. After that you’ll have to refill it with lubricant. If in this step you notice some water in the lubricant that might indicate that the shaft seal needs replacement. If you find this to be true you want replace it right away because a bad seal could end up costing you $1000 in repairs.
Next remove the spark plugs and spray some fogging oil into the cylinders. put into a corrosion spray on the connections and clean the house and and replace the spark plugs with new ones.
Now it’s time to take a good look at the steering and the cables. Check out the steering column and clean any crime as well as letting the shaft air out. Use anti-corrosion spy on all the cables.
Disconnect the battery, clean the terminals and spray them with anti-corrosion liquid. Store the battery properly but don’t forget to charge it a couple days each month while the boat is being stored.
While in storage be sure to tilt the motive U-boat downward in the running position and cover it with a motor cover. But don’t use a plastic one as this will trap the more sure, you want to get a good cloth or canvas cover so that the motor can breathe.
Don’t forget about the boat trailer you want to inspect out as well and resell the bearings, check the tires and spray any metal with anti-corrosion spray.
while this may seem time-consuming, assuring that you follow the appropriate boat storage procedures will ensure that you have your boat and took top shape for the next summer season.
