Some Tips On Vehicle Storage
Summer is over and the nights are drawing in and many
people are now looking to place their RV or other large vehicle into
vehicle storage. For many they will already have a place where it can
be stored whether it is outside their own home or at a specialist
vehicle storage location. In order for the vehicle to remain in as
pristine condition as possible below are just some things that you
should consider when storing your vehicle over an extended period of
time.
1. Controlling the Humidity within your Vehicle
The air inside a closed up RV will contain differing amounts of
moisture and it all depends on the climate where you live and the type
of storage facilities that you utilize. If you can and the storage
facility allows you to why not put a electric dehumidifier in your RV
as this will help safeguard against humidity conditions (or if you can
why not have two units in the RV). Also it is advisable that you leave
a roof vent or two open if this at all possible so that moisture can
escape.
2. To Cover or Not to Cover
If you need to cover your RV then it is best that you build an
“A” frame structure around your vehicle in order that it
will not only repel what ever the weather has to throw at it, but will
allow air to circulate beneath the cover and above the roof of your
vehicle. Unfortunately if you lay the cover directly over your vehicle
you are likely to find dry rot when you return to your vehicle next
summer because the moisture contained inside the vehicle has not been
allowed to escape. You could also end up with damage to the outside of
your vehicle where the covering has rubbed against it when the wind has
been blowing.
3. Battery – What to do with it when Vehicle is in Storage
When placing your vehicle in storage it is important that you clean and
remove the battery or batteries from the vehicle and store them in a
cool place. Also it is vital that you top up the water level on each
battery and check and if you need to recharge them each month.
Unfortunately deep cycle batteries will self-discharge in a month
(remember and discharged batter is an unhappy battery). When topping up
any battery it is important that you use distilled water only. If you
can do not leave the battery outside as it will freeze in sub-zero
temperatures so store indoors (a garage is really the ideal location
for such items).
So just by following these simple steps above when it comes to
collecting your vehicle ready for the summer months it should be in the
same condition as when it went into vehicle storage.
