Self Moving Companies

There are different types of self moving companies depending on your particular needs and preferences.
If you are willing to do some or all of the work on a move and don't want the expense of a full scale mover then you should consider your options before making a final decision.

The first thing you should think about before considering any self moving companies is the time and work involved in moving your self. Do you have the extra time or would it be better to pay a mover? If you are planning to move yourself, check out our tips for organizing a self move. Next consider the amount and type of work. Moving is physically demanding so you need to make sure you have the stamina to move your entire household. Second, it requires muscle.

You probably have lots of heavy furniture and may be moving appliances so make sure that you can handle lifting these items. It helps to have some big strong friends that owe you favors!

If you do decide that a self move is for you, there are a couple of self moving companies that offer solutions.

Uhaul rents trucks, vans and trailers that can all be used to move your household belongings from 1 location to another. You can even rent their trucks for one way moves out of state. This is a no service shop where you will have to go pick up the truck, pack it up yourself, drive it, and unpack it and the new location, then return the truck. You will only be able to have the truck for 1 or 2 days (longer of course if you are driving cross country) so you will need to plan the timing of the move to coincide with the rental of the truck and then work quickly to make sure you can get the truck back in time so you aren't charged for an extra day.

Pods is another kind of self moving company but using this method will allow you to go at a slower pace. They will deliver a large storage "pod" to your home and you simply pack it up at your leisure. The pod container sits in your driveway and you can pack it a little bit at a time making the whole moving thing a bit easier. This is a great way to go if you plan on packing away a little bit at a time - once you pack the box simply put it in the pod and it is out of the way until you move. Once the pod is full, call up the company and they will come and drive the pod to your new location where you can unpack it at your leisure as well. If you have a span of time in between homes, you can have your pod stored in their facility until it is time to move into the new house.
